A prepaid card is a card you load with funds in advance so you can use it at your Vets, online pharmacies or other veterinary related services. It cannot however be used at an ATM
Are prepaid cards safe?
Yes, especially when issued by regulated entities like IDT Financial Services. While they aren’t protected by FSCS, funds are held in secure, ring-fenced accounts.
Prepaid cards vs. credit cards
- Prepaid: Spend only what you load.
- Credit: Borrow and repay with interest.
Prepaid cards vs. regular cards
- Prepaid: Great for budgeting, no bank account needed.
- Regular: Linked to your bank, offers recurring payment support.

Yes, MyPetCard is a Visa prepaid card accepted by all Vets, Online Pharmacies and Veterinary service providers such as Physiotherapists and referral specialist vet services
Where can I use my card?
You can use your MyPetCard at:
- Veterinary practices across the UK
- Our partner pet medication website and their linked online Pharmacies

MyPetCard is designed to help you save specifically for your pet’s care. Limiting spending to vet-related services ensures your funds are used as intended.
Savings vs. Insurance
Is MyPetCard better than pet insurance?
It depends on your needs. Here’s how MyPetCard compares:
- Cost: Often cheaper, especially for young, healthy pets.
- Control: You decide how much to save and how to spend it.
- Flexibility: Use your funds for any pet care — from routine to emergency.
- Ownership: The money is yours. If unspent, you can get it back.
If you face high costs, we can help you find vets offering 0% of low cost finance (subject to status).
Wouldn’t a bank savings account be better?
Saving £20/month for 5 years in a bank at 3.5% interest yields around £40 in interest.
With MyPetCard, you could receive over £350 of benefits on pet medications and visits to the Vet.
Are there any exclusions?
No. Unlike insurance, MyPetCard funds can be used for:
- Pre-existing conditions
- Vaccinations, flea/worm treatments
- Spaying/neutering
- Referral Vet services
I have an older pet — will this affect costs?
With insurance, premiums increase for pets over 8 years old.
With MyPetCard, you simply adjust your monthly savings based on your pet’s age or expected needs.
How much should I save each month?
- Minimum: £20/month
- Recommended: £30-£40/month per pet
As a guide, save around 60% of your previous insurance premium. Need help? Email us at help@mypetcard.co.uk.

Other Questions
What will trigger any additional card charges?
For lost, damaged or stolen cards there is a charge of £5 inc P & P for a replacement. This will be deducted from your account if you contact our finance team to make arrangements to order a new card on: finance@mypetcard.co.uk
How do I get a prescription to order my pets medication?
If your vet prescribes a medication you can ask for a prescription.
If your pet needs long term medication your Vet will want to assess the suitability of the medication so they will start with a short term prescription. You can then ask for a repeat prescription which if not a human prescribed drug (yes your pet will sometimes be prescribed human medications!) you can ask for a prescription which is valid for six months. For human type medication you can only get a prescription for a month.
Do I need a card for each of my pets?
No, you can use one card. Which means you save even more money by not having multiple policies
